Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has identified delay in the administration of justice as a major challenge that must be jointly tackled by all relevant stakeholders in the justice sector. While Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day Stakeholder’s Summit organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice at the Convention Centre of Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, the president who was represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN),...urged stakeholders in the administration of justice to shun all forms of delay tactics. He further called on the judiciary to embrace day-to-day system for trials as well as introduce heavy punishment for deliberate act of delay aimed at stalling cases,... adding that it is also important for the judiciary to introduce significant costs for delay occasioned by lateness, under preparedness or deliberate tactics.

The commendation was made by the representative of the chancellor of federal university of technology Minna, His Royal Majesty, Eze Eberechi Dick during the exhibition of technological and project works manufactured by various department and units in the university. The representative of the chancellor who expressed satisfaction after inspecting various technological displays at the event noted that he was deeply impressed by the level of enterprise showcased by the university and spoke further concerning the event.     The vice chancellor, Professor Musbau Akanji equally expressed delights over the displays and advised members of staff and students not to rest on their oars but be relentless in attracting laurels to the university.    Part of the projects displayed was an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), manufactured by a 2015/2016 graduate student of the department of telecommunication engineering, Mr Yusuf yusuf who had this to say about his project.    The exhibit

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has embarked on a nationwide seven-day strike over shortfall in payment of salaries , allowances among other demands. while speaking to newsmen, the National President of the union, Mr. Usman Dutse, who noted that the industrial action would end on the 6th of February 2017, added that the strike will affect all federal and state-owned polytechnics as well as Colleges of Technology. ‎ Similarly, The General Secretary, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Lagos state polytechnic chapter, Mr. Uthman Olayinka, has stated that the strike began at noon as directed. Mr. Olayinka noted the strike was total and comprehensive as all lecturers are expected suspend all academic activities until the strike period elapses.

The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has called on all humanitarian agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations in the Northeast region of the country, to liaise with government agencies to help ease administrative bottlenecks. While receiving the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Ms. Ertharin Cousin, who led other members of the programme to the National Assembly, The Senate President, urged humanitarian agencies to always collaborate with security agencies so as to ensure their safety during their stay in the country. The senate president noted that such collaboration with different levels of governments in the country would help ease some of the administrative challenges the NGOs may encounter in their line of duty, especially on security and importation of their equipment. The national drug law enforcement agency (NDLEA) says it is pushing to extradite a lawmaker Buruji Kashamu  to the United States on drugs charges. Revealing this to newsmen the spokesman of the the N.D.L.E.A, Mitchell Ofoyeju stated that the agency has instituted a suit to remove a court order restraining the NDLEA from arresting Senator Kashamu. This development is a follow-up of extradition proceedings opened by the U.S court of appeal in chichago as senator kashamu had in 2015, sued the US government to prevent an imminent illegal abduction in Nigeria. It would be recalled that senator Kashamu has been wanted for years in connection with a heroin smuggling operation,.. an allegation which he denies stating that he his dead brother whom he reportedly resembles ran the international drug ring in the 1990s.

French investigators on Monday quizzed presidential hopeful Francois Fillon and his wife Penelope over allegations that Penelope received 500,000 euros ($535,000) for a fictitious job as a parliamentary aide, legal sources said. The couple, who are the target of an embezzlement probe, were also questioned over payments Penelope received from a literary review owned by a billionaire friend of Francois Fillon. The Canard Enchaine investigative newspaper revealed last week that former prime minister Fillon had paid his wife for years from public money available to him as an MP for parliamentary aides. While employing family members is not illegal, the paper said it could find no proof that she did any work in return for the payments. Fillon has vehemently denied any wrongdoing by him or his wife, insisting that when he was an MP in Paris his wife did a lot of constituency work. Four men are suing the Nigerian Army over the alleged breach of their fundamental human rights, The Nigerian Army were been charged before Justice  Vera Venda  of the FCT High Court sitting in Jabi for alleged breach of fundamental human right. The applicants, who alleged breach of their rights, are Mr  Osisomo Ake ,  Daboy Clinton ,  Ebikimi Mathew  and  Bubaiyenumubofa James . The applicants were said to have been arrested by the Nigerian Army in Okaki Community in Rivers sometimes in January 2016. According to the applicants’ lawyer, Mr  Gabriel Egbule , they were arrested on allegation of terrorism and vandalism of oil pipeline in the state. Egbule said that the applicants were flown to Abuja from the state in August 2016, that since their arrest; they had been in the custody of the army. Suleman was invited by the DSS to appear at their Abuja office on Monday, January 30, 2017, by 10 am. The pastor has been in the books of the DSS, following a comment which he made during one of his sermons, where he allegedly told his members to kill Fulani herdsmen. Following the speech, the DSS reportedly planned to arrest him secretly from his hotel room in Ado-Ekiti where he went to hold a crusade. The attempt by the DSS to arrest the fiery pastor was foiled by the Ekiti state Governor, Ayo Fayose, who rescued Suleman. According to Punch, a source close to the pastor said  “Suleiman will be appearing before the DSS with about 30 lawyers because we believe that his persecution has become politicized.” The Pastor’s Communications Adviser, Phrank Shaibu also confirmed that his boss was invited by the DSS.

A Bank Cashier, 26-year-old David Anibolu, was on Wednesday sentenced to four years in prison by an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for stealing N9, 308,000 from a customer’s First Bank of Nigeria (FBN) Plc account. Anibolu was arraigned on April 3, 2014 on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. It was revealed by the prosecuting Police Superintendent, Chidi Okoye, that on the 22nd of March 2015, Anibolu who was on annual leave came to the bank where he worked at FBN Alaba 2 branch in Ojo under the pretext that he wanted to assist a customer in posting his land use charges. Anibolu allegedly used the opportunity to transfer the sum of N9.308 million from a customer's account into other accounts. “He fraudulently changed a customer’s identity and mandate card which enabled him to debit the said account of the sum N9 million and transferred it into various accounts,” Okoye said.
